Fair Winds Weekly — First Month as a New Homeschool Captain
Just started homeschooling? The first thirty days are about learning your crew, not proving you can replicate school at home.
The first month of homeschooling is disorienting even when it is the right choice. Your kids may test boundaries. You may miss alone time. The house will look worse before systems emerge.
Deschool gently — especially if kids came from traditional school. Allow boredom to appear; creativity often follows once screens and fill-in worksheets are not the default.
Focus on relationship repair and rhythm before ambitious academics. Read together, cook together, take walks, and observe what energizes each child.
Learn your state requirements early through HSLDA or your state organization, but do not let paperwork anxiety overshadow presence with your kids.
Connect with one other homeschool family this month. One conversation prevents many imagined catastrophes.
Fair winds this week, captain. You are learning to sail in real weather — and we will see you next dispatch with more homeschool navigation.
